New: Clinical Trial Locator
ALF has partnered with Antidote to provide a tool to help patients find clinical trials for which they might be eligible to participate. By answering a short series of questions, users will receive a list of trials in their geographic area that are looking for participants. Antidote uses publicly available data from Clinicaltrials.gov, so all trails are verified by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Learn more and access the tool here.
ALF is pleased to announce an updated Hepatitis B brochure as well as two brand new At-a-Glance educational pieces for Asian/Pacific Islanders and Men Who Have Sex With Men, two populations at higher risk for hepatitis B (HBV). These new resources are available in multiple languages including Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese as well as English. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted unanimously to include a new hepatitis B vaccine for adults to the 2018 Recommended Immunization Schedule for Adults Aged 19 Years or Older. Recently approved by the FDA, HEPLISAV-B, represents the first advance in hepatitis B in the past 25 years.
About 95% of adults who are exposed to HBV fully recover within 6 months (acute HBV) without medication. About 5% have HBV all their lives (chronic HBV) unless they are successfully treated with medications. Infants born to mothers infected with HBV are at high risk of developing chronic HBV. Chronic HBV can lead to cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver cancer, and liver failure.
On Thursday, March 8th ALF will offer a webinar focused on living-donor liver transplants. Swaytha Ganesh, M.D., medical director of the University of Pittsburg Medical Center (UPMC) Living Donor Transplant Program, will provide an overview of living-donor liver donation, including the process and considerations for donors and recipients. A parent advocate will also share her daughter’s story and strategies she used to find a living donor, and a patient who provided a living organ donation to his brother will share their story.
