Jessica’s Story
Primary Biliary Cholangitis
AVID ADVOCATE AND VIVACIOUS VOLUNTEER
Jess became involved with the American Liver Foundation (ALF) after being diagnosed with Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) in 2014. She had questions that needed to be answered and ALF was there for her.
“ALF gave me answers when I had none and a purpose beyond being someone with a rare disease. I was given a voice and ability to help others.”
CAME FOR THE RESOURCES. STAYED FOR THE MISSION.
Jess currently serves as an active member of ALF’s National Patient Advisory Council regularly raising awareness around liver disease in the public and with government officials. Her work has affected positive change for liver patients nationwide, including (increasing funding for NIH and CDC to improve research on liver disease and education. She has also gotten her state representatives to sign on current legislation for Living Donor Protection and the LIVER act.). She served as State Liver Champion (in 2015) and has participated in almost every ALF sponsored event – WOW! Jess said, “being a part of ALF has led to so many new friends and opportunities for me. Not to mention, it keeps me from just feeling like a “sick” person.”
WAYS YOU CAN GET INVOLVED
This year, Jess will lead Southwest Indiana’s Liver Life Walk happening on June 25th in Evansville, IN. Jess said, “I’m excited to host a walk and I hope we have an amazing turnout!” Jess and her team the Lucky Livers are thrilled to be back in person this year so if you’re in southwest IN, be sure to participate!
This week is Volunteer Appreciation Week and we just wanted to say, “thanks for being you, Jess!” Your unwavering support and dedication to the American Liver Foundation and the liver community is awe-inspiring. We are so lucky to have you by our side to raise awareness, funds and research so we can one day see a world without liver disease.
