I was born January 8, 1982 and diagnosed not long after that with Biliary Atresia. I received my Kasai, which ended up being unsuccessful thus requiring me to be put on the Liver Transplant waiting list. On October 15, 1984 I received my Liver Transplant at Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital (we are from St. Louis, MO however they were not doing liver transplants there during that time so my family and I had to travel to PA). My liver was from a child who passed away, unfortunately that is all the information I know. I just recently celebrated my 33rd Liver Transplant Anniversary. I am happy to report that I have been doing extremely well…off all my medications and have not experienced any rejection. I have had a very normal life even with my transplant (played volleyball as a child and through high school, went out of state for college, coach high school volleyball, volunteer for various organizations, own 5 dogs, am a licensed foster parent, and etc.). There is not a day that goes by that I do not think of my donor and his/her family and thank them for these 33 extra years because without their selfless act of donating their child’s organs I would not be here.
