Acetaminophen Risks
As Cold & Flu Season Strikes, Double-Check Your Medications
This is the season for colds and flu and as you head to the drugstore, it is important to be aware that too much acetaminophen can be dangerous.
Acetaminophen is the most common drug ingredient in America. Each week, more than 50 million Americans use acetaminophen in some form whether they realize it or not. That’s because acetaminophen is found in more than 600 different over-the-counter and prescription medicines, including generic and store brand pain relievers, fever reducers, and sleep aids as well as cough, cold and allergy medicines.
It’s safe and effective when used as directed, but taking more than directed can lead to liver damage and death.
The American Liver Foundation has partnered with the Acetaminophen Awareness Coalition on its Know Your Dose campaign to inform the public about acetaminophen safety.
