Progress Is Being Made, But ALF Needs Your Help
Did you Hear the News?
Even though 2020 has been a difficult year due to COVID-19, the American Liver Foundation (ALF) and our liver community received welcome news. This year’s Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to three scientists who made a pivotal contribution to the discovery of the hepatitis C virus. Harvey Alter, MD, Michael Houghton, Ph.D., and Charles Rice, Ph.D. — all previous recipients of the ALF Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award — received their Nobel Prizes on December 10 for the work that paved the way for treatment we have today.
Although millions have been treated and cured of viral hepatitis thanks to Drs. Alter, Houghton and Rice, the need for screening and treatment remains great. Approximately 2 million people are infected with hepatitis C but are currently undiagnosed and untreated.
ALF joined the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to eliminate hepatitis c by 2030.
To accomplish this lifesaving goal, we need your help.

Besides the ongoing challenge of viral hepatitis, COVID-19 created a world of uncertainty for our liver community. ALF stepped up and provided information and virtual education to more than 3 million patients, families and healthcare professionals. ALF’s National Helpline staff responded to nearly 10,000 inquiries for guidance and support.
